If you've been following the latest adaptations of Agatha Christie’s works, you might have noticed that not all productions hit the mark. Fortunately, Netflix has enlisted Chris Chibnall to lead the charge on Agatha Christie's Seven Dials.

Chibnall, known for his work on Life on Mars, various episodes of Doctor Who, and the acclaimed Broadchurch, brings a wealth of experience to the table. The series features a stellar cast, including Helena Bonham Carter, Martin Freeman, and Mia McKenna-Bruce.

When I had the opportunity to discuss Christie's legacy with Chibnall, it was clear he shares a deep passion for the author. Alongside Freeman, we explored Christie's iconic characters, the challenge of modernizing them, and a lesser-known BBC series worth watching.

‘This could bring Agatha Christie to a new generation’

Chibnall reflected on his childhood love for Christie’s novels, stating, "The characters in Seven Dials felt like the Agatha Christie I loved, but also different. It has a unique energy, particularly through the character of Bundle (Mia McKenna-Bruce), which I thought was refreshing. This could introduce Christie to a new generation."

Freeman added that Inspector Battle, his character, appears in four separate books, hinting at the potential for a prequel. "I imagined him as a meticulous man with a military background, likely having served in the army before joining the police force," he explained.

The crime drama in Agatha Christie's Seven Dials extends beyond the screen. Chibnall noted the connections to Broadchurch and Freeman's role as Watson in the Sherlock series. "It's gratifying when audiences appreciate your previous work in the same genre. If fans of Broadchurch enjoy Seven Dials, that’s a win," he said.

Freeman emphasized Christie's enduring appeal, stating, "Agatha has a massive fan base that stands on its own. Her work is timeless, and that's why we’re all tuning in."

As for what to watch next, Chibnall recommended the Joan Hickson Miss Marple adaptations from the 80s, suggesting a binge-watch session. UK viewers can find these episodes on Prime Video, while US and Australian fans can rent them via Apple TV.
