- Apple Notes might get a Google Gemini-powered update in iOS 26.4
- This will potentially let you create notes based on content from other apps
- That could fulfill a promise Apple made back in summer 2024
Despite facing competition from numerous notetaking apps, Apple’s Notes app remains a staple on my iPhone. Its straightforward design makes it ideal for organizing thoughts, managing grocery lists, and planning ahead. Now, it seems poised to become even more indispensable with a major upgrade reportedly arriving in iOS 26.4, thanks to Apple’s recent partnership with Google Gemini.
According to The Information, the upcoming update will introduce significant enhancements to the Notes app, integrating AI capabilities that will connect Siri with Google’s Gemini AI.
Specifically, it’s reported that Siri will be able to perform tasks such as creating a Notes document with a recipe or compiling information on various topics.
The prospect of integrating favorite recipes into the app is particularly exciting. When we first learned about Apple Intelligence in June 2024, Apple hinted at the ability to transfer information between apps.
Imagining the convenience of saying, “Siri, add these ingredients to my shopping list note” after finding a recipe in Safari is thrilling. This could significantly reduce the hassle of copying and pasting text across different applications.
Finally Delivering on Its Promise
Moreover, this functionality could extend beyond just recipes. Users might ask Siri to send images from the Photos app to contacts in Messages or extract addresses from emails to get directions in Apple Maps.
This cross-app capability was a key promise from Apple in 2024, and it appears the company is finally on track to deliver, even if it means partnering with Google.
Apple has introduced many useful features to Notes in recent years. I appreciate the app's ability to scan documents effortlessly, adjusting colors and cropping automatically. Additionally, having audio notes transcribed within the app is a valuable feature.
With Gemini-powered AI leading the way, the app may finally approach the capabilities Apple promised nearly two years ago. It’s clear why Apple chose Gemini, and I’m optimistic that the wait will be worthwhile.
