  • The Hannspree Lumo features a paper-like LCD display without backlight
  • It provides eye comfort similar to an e-reader, yet supports a 60Hz refresh rate and 16.7 million colors
  • However, its specifications are quite basic for a tablet

Innovation in the tablet and e-reader markets has been sparse, but the Hannspree Lumo stands out by merging the functionalities of both devices into one.

Equipped with a 7.8-inch proprietary LCD display, the Lumo reflects ambient light instead of relying on a backlight, mimicking the feel of reading from paper. This design minimizes eye strain, providing a comfortable reading experience akin to traditional e-readers.

Unlike typical e-readers that often feature slow refresh rates and limited color options, the Lumo boasts a vibrant display capable of 16.7 million colors, a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 5ms response time.

This Android 14 tablet is designed for both streaming movies and reading books. While it lacks a backlight, it includes an LED front light for use in dim environments.

Basic Specifications

Despite its promising features, the Lumo's specifications are quite basic compared to other Android tablets. It has a resolution of just 728 x 1024, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The 3,000mAh battery can last up to 6.5 hours at maximum brightness with the front light on.

While it may serve better as an e-reader than a tablet, the Lumo could be the ideal choice for those seeking a true hybrid device, and it also supports stylus input.

Priced at £299 (approximately $400 / AU$600), details on its availability in the US or Australia are yet to be announced.
