WARNING: spoilers for Spartacus: House of Ashur episode 8 ahead.
Spartacus: House of Ashur might be set in ancient times, but the emotional turmoil it brings is very much present. Just as I was processing the revelation of the Brothers Ferox's involvement in Opiter's (Arlo Gibson) demise in episode 6, we swiftly transitioned to the aftermath of Satyrus's (Leigh Gill) survival in episode 7.
In Spartacus: House of Ashur episode 8, the narrative shifts focus. Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) is causing turmoil among the women around him due to his growing affection for Viridia (India Shaw-Smith), while Achillia (Tenika Davis) is gradually regaining her strength. However, the real tension lies between Celadus (Dan Hamill) and Tarchon (Jordi Webber).
Tarchon feels threatened by Achillia and aims to sabotage her resurgence, prompting Celadus to sever their connection upon learning of Tarchon's actions. The climax occurs in the gladiator arena, where only one of them survives.
For Hamill and Webber, this episode was monumental in contrasting ways. Hamill described the experience of filming Celadus's death as "really hard and a little traumatic."
Celadus' Shocking Death in Spartacus: House of Ashur Episode 8
"I'm not gonna lie... it sucked," Hamill recounted. "It was challenging to convince my nervous system that it was over. We didn't need any acting techniques for this; we could immerse ourselves in the moment, and it felt real. I was left feeling a bit shaken afterward.
"Making your nervous system feel like it's facing death is tricky. There's immense pressure to honor the legacy of this series, and doing it half-heartedly would be unacceptable. Performing in front of 350 people was a significant physical challenge, but we also had to be emotional athletes.
"Doing take after take for hours was an actor's dream workout. However, I needed to take time to decompress and process everything afterward. It was a lot to handle."
As the episode concludes with Celadus lying in a pool of blood, the grief is palpable. It's essential to explore why he hesitated and welcomed death, which ties back to his connection with the female gladiator from the House of Proculus.
Celadus, brought in to battle Achillia, sees their romance reflected in her eyes, making it impossible for him to fight. In contrast, Tarchon's experience in the arena is driven by a desire to avenge the accidental death of a Roman civilian.
Webber shared, "It was glory, but it was clouded. I achieved what I wanted, yet I couldn't fully enjoy it due to the chaos surrounding me. I had love on my mind and was executing a master plan with Roman guards all around. I was uncertain of my fate."
How Tarchon and Achillia cope with Celadus's loss will unfold in Spartacus: House of Ashur episode 9, but I suspect it won't be easy.
