As Disney seeks to broaden its Star Wars offerings beyond traditional media, it carefully introduces new concepts that enhance the franchise's rich narrative while appealing to fans across generations.

This strategy has led to the creation of screen-accurate lightsabers, annual partnerships with Columbia Sportswear, and a growing array of toys and collectibles. The latest collaboration with Lego, however, introduces a fresh perspective.

Lego's new Smart Play system integrates sound and interactivity directly into physical sets without the need for apps or cloud connectivity, launching with three Lego Star Wars builds available on March 1.

Divya Dalal, Vice President of Global Hardlines at Disney Consumer Products, emphasizes that this technology is designed to enhance the play experience rather than stand alone. "It’s meant to enhance the play experience and add to the fun," Dalal stated. "All of the sounds and interactivity – they’re what bring the sets to life."

This collaboration builds on over 25 years of Lego Star Wars history, focusing on storytelling through play rather than mere display. "Yes, you can display it, but ideally, you’re recreating your stories of how you know it," Dalal added. "But now you get to do it in a new immersive way that makes someone want to play it over and over because it’s a different story."

With sets like the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or Throne Room set, builders are provided with the tools to create their own narratives. The Smart Brick, Smart Minifigures, and Smart Tags introduce reactive sound and character responses, allowing players to reinterpret familiar Star Wars moments.

Disney has been intentional about what Smart Play does not include. "It’s just taking the elements of what they like and putting it in a really safe environment within the essence of why you buy a Lego Star Wars set," Dalal explained. This balance reflects modern play patterns, merging digital elements with hands-on creativity while prioritizing physical construction.

"We are meeting kids where they are today in the digital age, while also grounding the tech in traditional physical building sets," Dalal continued. "DCP is constantly innovating to level up play."

Over its 25-year history, Lego Star Wars has expanded significantly, from premium $1,000 collector builds like the Death Star to more accessible sets for younger fans. The line has evolved alongside the franchise, connecting with not only the films but also animated series like The Clone Wars and recent Disney+ shows. Smart Play represents the next step in this evolution, indicating that Lego Star Wars is still growing rather than becoming repetitive.

This evolution is characterized by both ambition and restraint. Unlike previous technology-driven initiatives, Smart Play is notably simplified: it lacks screens, listening microphones, and AI, avoiding active network connections or reliance on the cloud.

While other Disney sectors explore AI-driven experiences, Smart Play embodies a different philosophy. As Dalal articulated, the technology is meant to extend play and enhance enjoyment, not distract or complicate the experience.

Star Wars is particularly suited for this approach. "Star Wars stories offer an endless play pattern given the galaxy is so vast," she noted. "The Smart Play system is a tool to help kids unlock their creativity and tell their own Star Wars stories."

This sense of scale is reinforced by the franchise’s iconic audio cues, from music to ship sounds, which naturally lend themselves to interactive play. "I think you have to have the right pairing of tech to IP," Dalal said. "And the Star Wars galaxy specifically offers endless storytelling and instantly recognizable elements from the saga like music, ship noises, and more."

Rather than directing play, Smart Play encourages curiosity. The Smart Brick reacts differently based on nearby characters or elements, promoting experimentation and surprise. "People love the unexpected," Dalal remarked. "There are fun Easter eggs within the sets and so many different ways to engage with the products."

For Disney and Lego, Smart Play signifies a mutual belief that technology should enhance storytelling, not overshadow it. By keeping the tech subtle, Lego Star Wars maintains the elements that have made it successful for decades while introducing new ways to engage with an ever-expanding galaxy.

"Fans have enjoyed Lego Star Wars sets for over 25 years," Dalal concluded. "This innovation is the perfect hybrid of physical and digital play, and will bring Star Wars home in a fresh and exciting way."
