Apple’s Messages app, formerly known as iMessage, has evolved far beyond simple text messaging. It serves as a versatile platform for sharing everything from money to locations and even animated drawings, especially when communicating with other iPhone users.

As a long-time iPhone user, I’ve extensively explored the app's features, which go well beyond basic messaging.

To access these tools, open Apple Messages and select a conversation. Tap the plus (‘+’) sign next to the text box at the bottom of the screen to reveal a list of additional features. This list expands as you integrate apps that utilize Apple Messages, such as the Starbucks app.

Here are seven fun and practical tools that elevate your communication experience with Messages.

1. Create Custom Stickers from Your Photos

To make a sticker, open Apple Photos and select a photo with a subject suitable for cutting out. Press and hold on the subject until a wavy effect outlines it. Release your finger and choose the ‘Add Sticker’ option from the pop-up menu.

Note that Live Photos cannot be used for stickers; you must disable the Live Photo feature first.

Once your sticker is created, add it to your conversation by tapping the ‘+’ sign in Messages and selecting ‘Stickers.’ You can also apply effects to make your sticker appear puffy or sparkly.

2. Send Money Instantly

Why use services like Venmo or Zelle when you can send money directly through Apple Messages? If you have Apple Cash set up, simply tap the ‘+’ in Messages and select Apple Cash to send or receive money without needing another app.

3. Poll Your Group for Opinions

Need to decide where to eat or what time to meet? Instead of bombarding your group chat with questions, send a poll. Tap the ‘+’ in Messages and select ‘Polls’ to create one. While you can’t set a time limit, you can include multiple options for responses.

4. Schedule Messages for Later

This feature is a game-changer. You can write a message now and schedule it to be sent later, perfect for reminders or messages you want to send at a specific time. Tap the ‘+’ in Messages and choose ‘Send Later’ to set your delivery time, which can be up to 364 days in advance.

5. Automatic Check-Ins

For those who often ask you to confirm your safe arrival, the Check In feature is invaluable. Open Messages, tap the ‘+’, and select ‘Check In’ to set it up. You can configure it to send your location, battery level, and signal strength when you reach a specific destination or after a set time.

6. Send Starbucks Gift Cards

Want to treat someone to coffee? Use the Starbucks app integrated within Messages to send a gift card. Choose a design and set the amount before sending. This personal touch can be more meaningful than simply sending cash.

7. Share Animated Doodles

With the Digital Touch feature, you can send animated doodles to anyone using Apple Messages. These aren’t just static images; your recipient will see the lines as they are drawn. You can even record a video while drawing on the screen!
