  • Microsoft is expanding Windows Backup for Organizations
  • This will include restore at first sign-in as a 'second chance'
  • Currently in private preview, the feature is set to debut in 'early 2026'

Microsoft is set to introduce a new feature that enhances Windows Backup for Organizations, allowing administrators to include a restore option at first sign-in as a 'second chance' for users.

This functionality will enable Windows 11 users to restore their Microsoft Store apps and Windows settings right at their initial sign-in. This improvement aims to help organizations facilitate smoother transitions to the latest Windows versions by retaining essential settings, including Start menu pins and the list of installed Microsoft Store apps.

The new restore option will be available during the first sign-in, providing users with a ‘second chance’ to recover their environment if they missed the opportunity during the out-of-box experience (OOBE).

User Preferences Respected

Scheduled for rollout in ‘early 2026’, this feature is currently in private preview. It will support Microsoft Extra hybrid joined devices, multi-user setups, and Windows 365 Cloud PCs.

Microsoft has confirmed that if users choose to skip the restore opportunity during OOBE, their decision will be honored.

This update aims to enhance device recovery for organizations while ensuring a user-friendly restoration process, minimizing downtime and boosting productivity.

‘With first sign-in restore, your users get back to work faster, with their preferred settings and Microsoft Store app list ready to go,’ Microsoft stated in its blog update.

Those interested in testing the preview can sign up by joining the private preview - completing an interest form, which will be open until February 13, 2026.

To be eligible for the preview, participants must be part of the Microsoft Management Customer Connection Program and have a signed non-disclosure agreement (NDA). If you're not currently a member of the program, sign up today.
