Noise levels were measured at head height and near the lap (3 inches away), both for the cooling pads alone and combined with the laptop's own fans during stress tests.

Therefore, if silent operation is critical, models like the Klim Ultimate or TECKNET offer reasonable cooling at whisper-quiet noise levels.

To explore the practical impact of cooling pads on performance, long encoding tests were conducted on two laptops: a MacBook Air M5 with passive cooling and an Acer Predator Helios 300 with aggressive built-in fans.

On the MacBook Air M5, using the Klim Ultimate cooling pad mildly improved performance by reducing CPU throttling during a demanding workload, cutting encode time by about 8 minutes (7%) and increasing average FPS by 10%. This suggests cooling pads can help less powerful or passively cooled laptops maintain performance under stress.

In contrast, the Predator Helios 300 showed almost no change with cooling pads during encoding tasks, indicating its built-in cooling is sufficient for such workloads. However, during intense gaming with max settings, the benefits of a cooling pad might be more noticeable.

It’s worth noting that extreme external temperatures (e.g., severe heatwaves) may overwhelm any cooling system, making pads or internal fans less effective.
