Cloudflare has launched a strong critique of Italian authorities after receiving a hefty fine, threatening to remove its servers from the country and withdraw support for the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The web infrastructure company confirmed it has been fined approximately €14 million ($17 million) by AGCOM, Italy’s communications regulator. The penalty was imposed because Cloudflare declined to register with Italy’s controversial Piracy Shield framework, which mandates blocking access to copyright-infringing domains via its 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver.
