Phantom Twist introduces a radical shift: the entire body spins at extremely high speed—up to 25 rotations per second—making the drone appear as a barely visible blur rather than a distinct object. This approach doesn’t rely on traditional camouflage. Instead, it targets a fundamental weakness of human eyesight, which struggles to resolve moving objects at such speeds.

The Phantom Twist uses a single motor setup that spins the body and the propeller in opposite directions. Its components are distributed at different heights and angles, which, when spinning, ensures nothing remains visually stationary for the eye to latch onto. Engineers relied on AI to test thousands of layouts and optimize for maximum invisibility, with simulations confirming it’s significantly harder to spot than standard drones. However, auditory stealth still isn’t addressed—the drone's propeller remains audible even when it's visually hard to detect.

Can Spinning Drones Capture Usable Images?

Currently, Phantom Twist is a research prototype and doesn’t have a camera on board. Integrating imaging gear onto a drone spinning at high speed is a major, unsolved challenge.
