As a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, I've been intrigued by OpenAI's new ChatGPT Go subscription plan. In fact, I believe it might be worth considering a downgrade. Let me explain.
ChatGPT Go is a streamlined version of ChatGPT that offers a middle ground between the Free tier and the Plus tier. While it was previously available in select regions, ChatGPT Go has now launched globally, including in the US.
If you're currently subscribed to ChatGPT Plus and don't fully utilize its features, switching to Go could provide everything you need. However, there is one significant drawback that I'll discuss shortly.
Here are the current subscription prices for ChatGPT in the US:
- ChatGPT Go: $8/month
- ChatGPT Plus: $20/month
- ChatGPT Pro: $200/month
(In the UK, the prices are £8 for Go and £20 for Plus.)
This means ChatGPT Go is 60% cheaper than Plus, resulting in a monthly savings of $12, which totals $144 annually. It's worth examining whether this switch could lead to substantial savings.
ChatGPT Go vs ChatGPT Plus
A free ChatGPT account is functional but quite limited. Users have restricted access to ChatGPT-5.2, which then reverts to a less powerful model, along with capped image generation, limited Deep Research access, fewer file uploads, and restricted memory.
With a Plus account, these limitations are significantly increased. You can generate far more images, enjoy enhanced memory, choose from multiple language models (including the popular ChatGPT-4o), and gain greater access to Deep Research. Plus subscribers also have access to Codex for coding and Sora for video generation.
ChatGPT Go occupies a position between these two tiers. It offers improved access to ChatGPT-5.2, better memory, more image generation, additional messages and uploads, and longer memory retention. However, it does not include access to Codex or Sora.
The key takeaway is this: if you're a casual ChatGPT user currently paying for Plus and not generating many images or creating videos in Sora, downgrading to ChatGPT Go could be a sensible choice. The generous limits of Plus mean many users likely don't come close to reaching them, making a Go account sufficient.
The Drawback
While the idea of downgrading to Go may be appealing, there's an important consideration. OpenAI has announced that it will begin displaying ads in ChatGPT, but only for Free and Go tiers.
Currently, ads are being rolled out in the US, with plans to expand to other regions in the future.
We've seen previews of how these ads will be integrated. While not ideal, they appear relatively unobtrusive and contextually relevant to the ongoing conversation.
Ultimately, the decision comes down to whether the $12 monthly savings outweighs the presence of ads in your chat experience. For some users, this trade-off may be worthwhile, while others might prefer to remain ad-free with Plus.
