OpenAI CEO Sam Altman isn’t known for oversharing about ChatGPT's inner workings. However, he acknowledged the challenges of keeping the AI chatbot both safe and useful. This admission came in response to Elon Musk's critical posts on X (formerly Twitter), where Musk warned against using ChatGPT, citing an article that linked the AI assistant to nine deaths.

The heated exchange between these two influential figures in artificial intelligence revealed more than just personal tensions. Musk's comments lacked context regarding the deaths and the ongoing lawsuits against OpenAI, prompting Altman to respond with a heartfelt defense of the company's approach.

Altman emphasized the need to protect vulnerable users while ensuring that the guardrails in place still allow all users to benefit from the tools. He stated, “We need to protect vulnerable users, while also making sure our guardrails still allow all of our users to benefit from our tools.”

Musk is currently suing OpenAI and Altman over the organization’s shift from a nonprofit research lab to a capped-profit model, claiming he was misled when he donated $38 million to help establish the company. He argues that the organization now prioritizes corporate interests over public benefit. Altman contends that this transition was essential for developing competitive models and ensuring responsible AI advancement.
