That was my experience this week, but fortunately, ChatGPT came to my rescue.
Having recently purchased my second-hand car, I didn’t have a manual and was unfamiliar with the dashboard symbols. I noticed it displayed a “19 mph limit” without any explanation.
Pushing the Limit
I snapped a photo of the dashboard, uploaded it to ChatGPT, and asked for clarification. Almost immediately, it informed me that my car had a speed limiter feature activated at 19 mph.
I had no idea my car even had this feature! Curious, I asked how it had been turned on. ChatGPT suggested there might be a button on one of the stalks behind the steering wheel. A quick check revealed a clearly labeled 'Limit' button. I switched it off, and just like that, my issue was resolved.
As for how it was activated? I must have accidentally brushed against the button while driving.
If I had waited for roadside assistance, only to be told to press a single button, I would have been mortified. Now that I know this feature exists, I can quickly identify the issue if it arises again and adjust the settings accordingly.
On the Road Again
While I could have Googled the issue on my phone, the ability to upload a photo and receive a tailored explanation made all the difference.
The response was not only accurate but also instantaneous. More importantly, it got me back on the road without the embarrassment of needing help.
This, to me, is the true purpose of AI: to quietly resolve small, real-world problems when you need it most, rather than generating endless content or cluttering social feeds with low-effort outputs. When used thoughtfully, AI can genuinely enhance everyday life; when misused, it risks becoming just another intrusive technology we never asked for.
