  • ChatGPT announces ads are coming to its free tier
  • An $8-a-month ChatGPT Go is also coming, but it will still have ads
  • Opting out may require paying at least $20 a month

OpenAI has officially announced that ads will soon be featured in the free tier of ChatGPT. While the ads are not yet live, users can expect to see them in the coming weeks.

The company confirmed this development in a detailed blog post on January 16, 2026, outlining its advertising strategy and the principles behind it: "Our mission is to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity."

Alongside this announcement, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go, a more affordable tier priced at $8 per month. Unfortunately, this option will not allow users to avoid ads.

Integrating advertising into ChatGPT makes sense for OpenAI, which has yet to achieve profitability. With operating costs reportedly high and a user base of around 800 million monthly active users, the potential for revenue is significant.

Addressing even a small portion of these users could generate billions in revenue. The addition of ads may also help ChatGPT compete more effectively with its main rival, Google Gemini, which already incorporates ads into its search results.

What will the ads look like?

According to OpenAI, ads will appear at the bottom of prompt results. This means users can read their answers before encountering advertisements, such as those for Squarespace.

The ads will be contextually relevant, meaning they will relate to the content of the ChatGPT conversation. For instance, if you inquire about the best laptop to buy, you might see an ad from Dell or Lenovo.

Will these ads be different?

OpenAI intends to allow advertisers to engage with consumers, enabling them to ask questions about products or purchasing decisions, similar to how they interact with ChatGPT.

OpenAI states, "AI tools level the playing field even further, allowing anyone to create high-quality experiences that help people discover options they might never have found otherwise." All ads will be clearly labeled.

Who won't see ads?

Individuals under 18, or those who inform ChatGPT of their age, will not see any advertisements. Additionally, ads will be excluded from discussions about health and politics.

Importantly, ads will not influence the information provided in your prompt responses, ensuring that no bias is introduced in favor of advertisers.

Controls and opting out

OpenAI has committed to not selling customer data to third parties. Users will have the option to disable personalization and clear their data, which may affect the relevance of the ads displayed.

To avoid ads altogether, users can subscribe to a paid tier that excludes the new $8-a-month ChatGPT Go plan. However, to completely eliminate ads, users will need to opt for the $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus plan.

OpenAI assures users, "We’ll always offer a way to not see ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that’s ad-free," suggesting there may be additional options for opting out in the future.

Advertisement testing in the free and ChatGPT Go tiers will begin in the US shortly, with no specific timeline for broader rollout.
