Essential DJI Accessory for Vlogging: The $14 Mobile Receiver

Recently, I discovered an affordable accessory for DJI's wireless microphones that has significantly improved my workflow. Priced at just $14 / £14, the DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver is designed to enhance the usability of DJI microphones with smartphones. While DJI mics are already compatible with smartphones, this accessory has made a remarkable difference in my experience.

What Problems Does the Mobile Receiver Solve?

To understand its value, let's look at the current challenges. Using a DJI wireless mic with your phone is possible, but it typically involves either Bluetooth pairing or connecting the on-camera receiver to the phone's USB port. While Bluetooth is convenient, the audio quality is disappointing, often making the built-in microphone a better option. The receiver, while capable of delivering high-quality audio, has a bulky form factor.

The wireless receivers included with the DJI Mic 2, Mic 3, and Mini are designed for mirrorless cameras, not smartphones. This results in an awkward fit and the risk of damaging the USB connector. Additionally, you cannot charge your phone while the receiver is connected, and you must remember to charge the receiver beforehand.

How the Mobile Receiver Works

The Mobile Receiver addresses these issues and offers additional benefits. It's a compact device, less than 9mm thick, that connects to the USB-C port of your phone without protruding excessively. It weighs almost nothing, eliminating concerns about it becoming dislodged.

Powered by the phone, there's no need for charging, and it includes a USB-C port with pass-through power, allowing you to charge your phone during extended shoots. These features make it an essential tool for anyone who frequently records video with their phone.

I own both the DJI Mic 2 and the DJI Mic Mini. With my Osmo Pocket 3, I can record audio from both mics simultaneously. However, with my mirrorless camera and phone, I previously had to choose one. The Mobile Receiver allows me to pair both mics at once, just like with the Pocket 3.

This receiver is also compatible with older devices like the DJI Action 2, which lacks native support for DJI's wireless mics. Simply plugging in the Mobile Receiver works without any setup, making it versatile for various devices.

How to Use the Mobile Receiver

Notably, the Mobile Receiver lacks a screen for settings adjustments. Instead, it features a three-position slider for noise cancellation and a physical pairing button. Most settings are managed through the DJI Mimo app on your phone.

The Mobile Receiver pairs like a DJI camera, granting access to all the detailed settings available in the standard receiver's menu, including gain adjustment, stereo mode, and low-cut options.

If you own a DJI Mic 2, Mic 3, or Mini (note that it does not work with the original DJI Mic), and you shoot with your phone, the DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver is a must-have. At just $14 / £14, this accessory has transformed my shooting process, offering incredible versatility for a minimal investment.
