Weekend Watchlist: New Movies and TV Shows on Streaming Services (January 9)

Congratulations on completing the first full week of 2026! If you're looking to shake off those post-New Year blues, there's no better way than diving into some of the best streaming services available.

This weekend brings a wealth of new movies and TV shows to enjoy. So, without further ado, let's explore what you can watch from the comfort of your couch before Monday arrives. – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter

The Pitt Season 2 (HBO Max)

In my review of The Pitt Season 2, I expressed my excitement for this highly anticipated show. Picking up 10 months after the last season, the day shift returns just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

Lead Doctor Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch is more grounded than before, planning a three-month sabbatical after the holiday shift. His replacement, Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi), enters the ER with an agenda, aiming to implement significant changes.

As expected, chaos ensues from the moment the ER doors open, with stakes rising in HBO Max's award-winning second season. By blending its successful formula with fresh dynamics, The Pitt remains as compelling as ever. – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

People We Meet on Vacation (Netflix)

While it may not be groundbreaking, I was genuinely impressed by People We Meet on Vacation. Based on the popular romance novel by Emily Henry, this film serves as a delightful reminder that January doesn't have to be dreary.

The chemistry between the leads is remarkable, and who needs bold filmmaking when you can enjoy a cozy narrative? This film emphasizes that platonic love can be just as significant as romantic love.

Eventually, People We Meet on Vacation does introduce romance, but for much of its runtime, it focuses on two individuals learning to appreciate each other for who they truly are. – JV

The Night Manager Season 2 (Prime Video)

After a nine-year hiatus, Jonathan Pine returns under a new alias, but Tom Hiddleston's character is far from relaxing as he embarks on a new thrilling mission. This is one of my most anticipated Prime Video shows of the year, already airing on BBC One in the UK.

Pine faces off against the menacing Colombian businessman Teddy dos Santos as past demons resurface. Season 2 also brings back familiar faces like Olivia Colman and Alistair Petrie. With the first three episodes available this Sunday, your weekend viewing is set. – Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer

A Thousand Blows Season 2 (Hulu/Disney+)

If you're tempted to step back in time to witness an all-female gang planning a daring theft amidst street brawls in Victorian London, Steven Knight’s returning period drama is perfect for you.

A Thousand Blows Season 2 picks up right after its predecessor, with Sugar Goodson battered and Mary Carr determined to reunite the Forty Elephants to reclaim the streets.

All six episodes are available now on Hulu or Disney+ for international viewers, so you can binge-watch without delay. Just be prepared: while there may be less boxing this season, it still delivers a brutal punch. – Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor

His & Hers (Netflix)

Netflix’s latest crime thriller His & Hers has sparked mixed reviews, but everyone agrees on its shocking ending that will surely be the talk of the weekend.

Starring Marvel actors Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, the series follows a reporter and a detective who each suspect the other of murder. Whether their suspicions are justified remains to be seen.

This six-episode series is perfect for binge-watching, with all episodes now available on Netflix. Given the buzz surrounding its twist, you'll want to stream it quickly to avoid spoilers. – LB

Tron: Ares (Disney+)

Despite its disappointing box office performance in 2025, Tron: Ares makes its Disney+ debut less than three months after its theatrical release.

Set 15 years after Tron: Legacy, the latest installment stars Jared Leto as Ares, an AI program labeled as the "perfect, expendable soldier." However, as Ares crosses into the real world, the lines between reality and the digital realm begin to blur.

While I enjoyed Tron: Legacy, I’m unsure if I’ll rush to watch this sequel due to its mixed reviews and Leto's involvement. Perhaps you will be more inclined. – TP

The 2026 Golden Globe Awards (Paramount+)

Prepare your ballgowns and tuxedos, as the next major awards ceremony of the season is upon us! The 83rd Golden Globes will air this Sunday on CBS and Paramount+ in the US.

To catch it live, you'll need to subscribe to the Premium tier; those with an Essential subscription can only watch it on demand. With Nikki Glaser returning as host, we can expect another entertaining night filled with laughter and deserving winners. – AS
